Never lose a bank statement

With online statements you'll never have to file your bank statements again. Digital bank statements are in the same format as hard copies. The only thing that changes is the way you receive them. And if you ever need a paper copy of a statement, you can give us a call or visit us at your local branch to request one.

Online banking security

You choose your own log on details when you register for online banking - which makes them unique, secure and easy to remember. Each time you log on, you'll be asked for your username, the answer to a memorable question and a unique code your personal Secure Key will generate.

Your safety is paramount to us. Our online banking service is protected by industry-leading security technologies, providing the strongest defence against unauthorised access. We offer two log-on options for your convenience:

Passwords

This allows you to log on with a user name and password. When you log on with passwords, you can carry out simple day-to-day banking tasks.

Secure Key

This is an electronic portable security device which adds an extra layer of security to online banking. When you log on with the device, you get access to the full online banking service. If you forget your Secure Key, don't worry, you can use your password to log on.

Security tips to protect yourself online

Keep your passwords and security details safe, so no one else can access your online accounts.
Download security updates and patches for the computer programs you use.
Update your anti-virus software regularly to protect your computer against attacks from new viruses.
Install a personal firewall to block hackers and to stop spyware recording the personal information you enter online.
Avoid using public computers to access online banking.

Global security network

To protect your account, we have a global network of security experts who work round the clock to identify threats and investigate suspicious activity. If we see something unusual that doesn't fit your banking profile, we'll try to stop the transaction being completed - and contact you to check if it's valid.

If we discover someone has used your account to make unauthorised payments or transfers, we'll take steps to minimize the impact on you. These steps include blocking transactions, suspending your account temporarily or closing your account and opening a new one.

Encryption

When you manage your HSBC accounts online, advanced encryption software stops anyone accessing your information when it passes between your computer and our secure systems. You know you're in a secure, encrypted area when you see https in the web address - and the locked padlock symbol in your browser status bar at the bottom of the page.

Firewalls

There are two types of firewall. A personal firewall protects your computer from hackers and viruses. Network firewalls protect private networks - and let you control who can access them.

At HSBC we use network firewalls to protect your personal information and account details. To protect your computer, you should activate the firewall in your operating system - or install a separate firewall if your system doesn't have one.

Digital certificates

Digital certificates are ID cards for web pages. They contain a company's name, a unique serial number and a digital signature - so you can check that the page you're viewing is legitimate.

HSBC's extended validation digital certificate turns the address bar in your browser green. To read the details, double click on the locked padlock symbol in your browser status bar at the bottom of the page - or on the green address bar at the top.

Frequently asked questions

Registering for online banking is simple. If you're new to online banking, select "Register now" above, and the registration process will be completed in 5 easy steps:

Accept the Terms & conditions
First, you'll be asked to read the HSBC online banking terms and conditions. Once done, click the checkbox at the bottom of the page to signify your acceptance of the terms and conditions, and then click "Continue".
Verify your identity
Select your account information from the list and fill in the required details. You have the option of using your debit card, credit card or phone banking number and the respective PIN. Click "Continue" to proceed to the next step.
Set up your log on details
You'll need to create your username. Your username is composed of at least 5 alphanumeric characters. This will serve as your permanent access ID for online banking. After creating your username, it's time to choose a memorable question and set your memorable answer. Then, you will also need to create a password. These will be your unique log on settings. Click "Continue" to proceed to the next step.
Set your security questions
Select the security questions and provide corresponding answers. These security questions will allow you to securely and conveniently reset your memorable question, memorable answer, or password should the need arise. Click "Continue" to proceed.
Confirmation
A confirmation page of your successful online banking registration will appear. Once completed, you will be able to access your accounts through online banking and the HSBC Mobile Banking app.

To search for a specific transaction, select the 'search' option above your transaction list. Search can only find transactions made in the last 90 days.

To view your historic statements, select 'eStatements / eAdvices' and 'eStatements'.

Your recent transactions can be downloaded into CSV, OFX or QIF format, which allows them to work with other programs such as Microsoft Excel. Select the 'Download' button located beneath your transactions.

Historic statements are available to view online or download as a PDF only.

If you forgot your password, select, 'forgotten password' on the password screen to retrieve it. If you enter your password incorrectly too many times, you'll need to follow the prompts to retrieve your password.

On your online banking homepage, select 'Payment and transfers' and choose whether it's a new payee or an existing payee. If it's an existing payee, you will be able to select the company from a pre-defined list. If the company you want to pay is not on the list, you'll need to enter their details and use your Secure Key to finish the payment.
